Sparks Give Back is back!! 2019 will be about giving back to a charity that is close to home. One of our coaches is affected by this disease and we have chosen to donate all proceeds to the VHL Alliance!
Von Hippel-Lindau, also known as VHL is a rare genetic disorder that causes tumors, both benign and cancerous, to grow in various parts of the body. VHL is typically diagnosed in early adulthood and effects 1 of every 30,000 individuals.
VHL patients can experience tumors in multiple areas of the body and are at a higher risk than normal for certain cancers such as renal cell carcinoma. Typical VHL tumors can be be found in the brain, spine, eyes, pancreas, adrenal glands and kidneys. Symptoms of VHL can vary among individuals and depend on the size and location of the tumors.
There is currently no cure for VHL, but early diagnosis and treatment of specific manifestations can substantially decrease complications and improve quality of life. For this reason, VHL patients are usually screened routinely and followed closely by a team of medical professionals.
